A rainy day at Disney World is inevitable, especially in the summertime. Florida just loves those afternoon thunderstorms!
Fortunately, Disney’s Hollywood Studios has many indoor shows and rides so you can stay dry while continuing a magical Disney day. In this post, I’ll tell you the Disney Hollywood Studios rides and attractions that are indoors and offer a relief from the rain … and the heat.
Star Wars Launch Bay + Walt Disney Presents
Florida is known for its intense summertime thunderstorms that seem to pop up out of nowhere and are gone as soon as they appear. If you’re visiting in the summer and need an hour to wait out a storm, there are two indoor walk through attractions at Hollywood Studios that are perfect!
There’s no line to enter Star Wars Launch Bay and Walt Disney Presents. Once inside, you can stay inside and linger as long as you want. These two attractions are perfect to escaping a thunderstorm for as long as you need!
At Star Wars Launch Bay, there are numerous exhibits showcasing Star Wars models and replicas, movie props, and movie costumes. A theater shows a brief documentary and there is, of course, a Star Wars gift shop. You may even run into roaming Stormtroopers or Jawas near the cantina set (no food service here, but a great photo op!).
There are character meets with Chewbacca, BB-8, and Kylo Ren inside Star Wars Launch Bay, each with a separate line and none offering FastPass. A Star Wars fan who meets all three characters and enjoys all the displays could easily spend an hour inside Star Wars Launch Bay.
Walt Disney Presents is a walk through museum of Walt’s life from his childhood in Marceline, Missouri to the development of his animation studio and theme parks. A “museum” may sound boring, but I can’t imagine visiting Disney World and never seeing this history of the man who made the parks possible!
At the end of the walk through is a theater that alternates between airing a brief film titled One Man’s Dream on Walt’s life and an extended preview of the next Disney movie to hit theaters worldwide if a release is upcoming.
Walt Disney Presents is also where you can currently meet Mike and Sully from Monsters, Inc. View all the displays, watch the movie, and meet the characters and you’ll easily spend an hour in Walt Disney Presents as well.
Indoor Rides at Hollywood Studios
With the exception of Slinky Dog Dash and Alien Swirling Saucers, all Hollywood Studios rides are indoors, though some queues begin outside. Alien Swirling Saucers is under cover, but the Slinky Dog Dash ride is outdoors and will close during a thunderstorm.
If sprinkles begin to fall in Toy Story Land, head to Toy Story Mania. The ride and most of the queue is indoors.
Nearby, Star Tours is also an indoor attraction with a queue that will mostly keep you inside unless the line is very long and extends into the outdoor Endor forest area. As a bonus, Star Tours exits into a gift shop so you can hang out there if the rain is still falling when your trip through the galaxy ends.
Over at the end of Sunset Boulevard, Tower of Terror and the Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster are both indoor attractions. The queues for both rides extend outside, but will keep you reasonably covered.
Indoor Hollywood Studios Shows
Disney’s Hollywood Studios has plenty of shows to choose from. These shows are indoors, offering relief from rain or a needed air conditioning break on a hot day:
- Voyage of the Little Mermaid
- Disney Junior Dance Party
- Lightning McQueen’s Racing Academy
- Muppet*Vision 3D
- For the First Time in Forever: A Frozen Sing-Along Celebration
- Star Wars: Path of the Jedi
Indoor Dining at Hollywood Studios
When you get hungry on a rainy day, all table service restaurants at Hollywood Studios are indoors. You’ll likely need a reservation, but Mama Melrose, 50’s Primetime Cafe, Hollywood & Vine, and the Hollywood Brown Derby often have same-day reservations available. Additionally, the Tune-In Lounge at the 50’s Primetime Cafe offers indoor seating to walk-ins.
If you don’t have dining reservations, you can always try quick service. The ABC Commissary and Backlot Express are both indoors. PizzaRizzo is our favorite for ample indoor seating, but is only open seasonally. Just steer clear of Woody’s Lunchbox and the Sunset Ranch eateries on Sunset Boulevard which are all outside.
Outdoor Attractions for Morning or Evening
With so much to do indoors at Hollywood Studios, which outdoor rides and attractions should you avoid in the rain and excessive afternoon heat?
As I mentioned, Slinky Dog Dash and Alien Swirling Saucers are the only outdoor rides and should be avoided. Definitely ride these in the morning or wait until after dark if the day is heating up or storms are in the forecast. There is little shade in all of Toy Story Land so plan your time in that area accordingly.
The remaining outdoor shows are all timed with most showtimes falling in the afternoon when heat is the worst and thunderstorms are most likely. Try to watch the first showings of the day that typically start around noon. Check the Times Guide in the park for accurate showtimes.
- Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular
- Beauty and the Beast – Live on Stage
- Star Wars: A Galaxy Far, Far Away stage show
If your little one is interested in Jedi Training, aim for a morning time slot as well as this presentation is outside with no covering.
Don’t let a little rain keep you away from Hollywood Studios. Bring a poncho and enjoy your day!
