What is there to do on your Disney World departure day?

On the last day of your Disney World trip, you may not schedule a flight out of Orlando until the evening. Maybe you don’t need to hit the road to drive home until later in the day. You may not want to spend this partial day in the parks, so what are you going to do on your Disney World departure day?

Simply choosing to stay at your hotel for a few hours and use its amenities or go for a swim may be the best choice for your family. However, if you have a little more time or want to continue exploring Disney World beyond your hotel, I have recommendations for you!

Several of these activities are the same as my Disney World Arrival Day Tips, but there are plenty of additional choices on the morning of your departure day that aren’t available during the evening of an arrival day. More character dining restaurants are open in the morning as well as several fabulous brunches.

Dining, shopping, paid recreation, and free activities are all discussed here to help you plan your Disney World departure day.

Go To The Parks!

Just like your arrival day, soaking in a few final hours in the parks may be the best way to end your trip and more economical than you’d probably expect.

Start the day by dropping your luggage at your hotel’s bell services and rope drop the parks! That first hour that the parks are open is the best way to enjoy the shortest lines so you could get a lot done even with just a morning.

But wouldn’t adding another day to my park ticket be expensive?

That all depends on the length of your trip. Disney World park tickets cost over $100 per day for 1- to 4-day park tickets. If you have a 3-day ticket and then decide to spend an additional morning at a park before heading home, adding that 4th day will be roughly $100 per person.

However, the cost to add additional days to a park ticket after 4 days drops dramatically. The difference between a 4-day and a 5-day park hopper is only around $15. In fact, the difference in price between a 4-day and an 8-day ticket (twice as many days!) is less than $60!

So, if you have at least a 4-day ticket, you should consider adding another day for your departure morning if $15 per person is makes sense for your family. That extra park time could even cost less than some of the dining and activity options I’ll be mentioning in this post.

If you have a 1-, 2-, or 3-day ticket, adding one additional day when you won’t be in the parks all day may not make financial sense, so keep reading for more ideas.

Character Dining

You can see characters outside of the parks so why not meet your favorites before that long drive or flight home?

More character dining opportunities are offered during breakfast than dinner, so you’ll have more restaurant choices than on your arrival day. These are the locations outside of the parks that serve character dining breakfasts:

1900 Park Fare at the Grand Floridian Resort offers a Supercalifragilistic Breakfast buffet with characters from Mary Poppins and Alice in Wonderland.

Cape May Cafe at Disney’s Beach Club Resort offers character dining only for breakfast. Meet Minnie and friends while enjoying a breakfast buffet.

Chef Mickey’s character buffet at the Contemporary Resort is open all day long. The Fab Five meet in chef attire.

Ohana at the Polynesian Village Resort has a character breakfast with Lilo, Mickey, and friends.

Topolino’s Terrace, atop the new Riviera Resort, offers fantastic views during a character breakfast with Mickey, Minnie, Donald, and Daisy

Trattoria al Forno at the Boardwalk Inn is home to the Bon Voyage Adventure character breakfast with Rapunzel, Flynn Rider, Ariel, and Prince Eric.

Disney buses to not offer resort-to-resort service so you’ll have to choose alternate transportation to get from your on-site Disney resort to any of the mentioned resorts. If you aren’t staying near one of these resorts, consider taking a ride service like Uber or a Minnie Van. You can also take a Disney bus from your resort to the nearest park and then take additional transportation from there. For the Grand Floridian, Contemporary, and Polynesian, take a bus to the Magic Kindom and then ride the resort monorail line to your destination. Beach Club and Boardwalk can be accessed by taking a bus to Hollywood Studios and then transferring to the Skyliner, Friendship boat, or simply walking to the Boardwalk area. The Riviera Resort is accessible by Skyliner from Hollywood Studios.

Unique Dining Outside the Parks

Want to end your trip with a special dining experience, but without characters? While many high-end restaurants are not opened for breakfast, there are still several incredible non-character dining options in the morning.

Brunch at the Top at the Contemporary Resort’s California Grill offers an all-you-can-eat fine dining brunch buffet and entrees from a menu, all while enjoying unlimited mimosas and unbeatable Magic Kingdom views.

There are several weekend brunches in Disney Springs at Wine Bar George, House of Blues, and Chef Art Smith’s Homecomin’.

Fantastic non-character breakfast buffets are available at Trail’s End in Fort Wilderness, The Wave … of American Flavors at the Contemporary, and Animal Kingdom Lodge’s Boma.

Dinner and Hotel Tours

If you’re looking for more budget-friendly dining choices, consider a moderately-priced hotel restaurant and combine your breakfast with a self-guided hotel tour.

Disney’s Old Key West Resort offers The Legend of Conch Flats Tour on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Combine the free resort tour with a breakfast at Olivia’s Cafe.

Disney’s Wilderness Lodge also offers free resort tours every Wednesday and Saturday morning. Enjoy a breakfast at Whispering Canyon Cafe before embarking on the Wonders of the Lodge Art & Architecture tour.

Or tour any of the resorts on your own and enjoy breakfast along the monorail line at Kona Cafe in the Polynesian Village Resort or the Grand Floridian Cafe in the Grand Floridian Resort.

Activities Without Reservations

Don’t want to be tied down by reservations? Consider playing a round of mini golf at Winter Summerland or Fantasia Gardens. You may receive golf vouchers with your Magic Your Way ticket package, making mini golf a very budget-friendly activity.

Several resorts offer surrey bike rentals including the Boardwalk area, Old Key West, and the Port Orleans resorts.

Boating in Bay Lake and the Seven Seas Lagoon is probably my family’s favorite Disney World activity outside of the parks. Several different types of watercraft are available at any of the Magic Kingdom area resorts so you can easily enjoy tranquil time on the water following a delicious breakfast at any of the monorail loop or wilderness resorts.

Stop in the Bike Barn at Fort Wilderness to explore on the water. Canoe and kayak rentals are available without reservations.

Of course, shopping at Disney Springs is always an option for those last-minute souvenirs. Most stores open at 10:00 AM.
